Our History

In 1994, Dr. Wilder coined the phrase, "Running Medicine", to describe a subcategory of sportsmedicine dedicated to the special needs of the runner.

Since 1998, the Runner's Clinic at UVa has provided comprehensive management of running injuries as well as consultation regarding medical needs of runners. Our clinic cares for ALL runners regardless of age or ability, from purely recreational to elite.

In 2005, the SPEED (Strength, Power, Endurance, Education, and Development) Clinic was founded, providing the most sophisticated biomechanical and kinematic analysis available. This information documenting force production and joint motion has proven useful in injury prevention and treatment as well as performance enhancement.

To address the growing needs of our running community, Dr. Siobhan Statuta and Dr. David Hryvniak joined the team at The Runner's Clinic in 2011 and 2016 respectively, after completion of their fellowship training in sportsmedicine.

The Runner's Clinic is a Charlottesville community partner, providing sportsmedicine coverage to numerous running races and Cross Country and Track & Field Invitationals annually. We also provide educational seminars to the community, running groups, teams and clubs.

Since 2003, the Clinic has sponsored the "Running Medicine Conference", which is the nation's longest running educational course for clinicians caring for the runner, hosting the world's leading experts in Running Medicine.

Running Medicine, the consummate textbook resource for sportsmedicine professionals caring for runners is co-edited by Dr. Wilder and was first published in 2001. 20 years later, the third edition is in preparation.

Whatever your level of running, The Runner's Clinic at UVa is here to get you healthy and back on track!
